17th Century Italian School Religious Oil Painting “The Visitation”

The oil painting composition “The Visitation” depicts the Virgin Mary dressed in a blue robe visiting her cousin Elizabeth just after the Annunciation (the announcement by the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive a son by the power of the Holy Spirit to be called Jesus), an episode recounted in the Gospel of Luke (1:36-56). The youthful Virgin, from whom divine light emanates, greets her older cousin, herself six-months pregnant with Saint John the Baptist. The women are accompanied by their husbands: Joseph on the left hand side and Zacharias on the right.
